Who is Kelly Porter?

Kelly is a strong thirty six year old female detective who has moved back to her native Cumbria after a spell in the Met didn’t end as well as she’d imagined. A colleague hung her out to dry over a high profile case, and she applies for a job with the Cumbria constabulary. As a result, Kelly is feeling slightly wounded and needing to prove herself.
Why did she leave in the first place? She found the draw of the Capital irresistible and believed that detective work in a major city would test her mettle, and she was right. She happily swapped the fells and lakes of provincial Cumbria for the adrenaline highs of vast murder squads. And she rose through the ranks, gaining a good reputation.
But now she has returned and it’s going to take time for her to fit back in. She’s been away for a long time and she’s lost touch with old friends, and even family. Her tail is a little between her legs because she feels as though people will judge her as a failure. Back home, time has stood still in some ways and she has to slow down.
Kelly is a fit and attractive woman but she’s been unlucky in love. However, in Dark Game she meets a handsome mountain rescue volunteer who catches her interest- Johnny. Her job doesn’t help her love life: it’s all consuming and she won’t rest until she works all the leads. It doesn’t take her long to make allies at the office: a fictional Eden House in Penrith- the centre of the North Lakes Police.
Penrith sits on the edge of the national park and many of the buildings are constructed using local red sandstone. It’s a small town and not far from the perimeter of Kelly’s patch, but even when she has to travel to Barrow-in-Furness to consult with South Lakes Police, it’s a pleasant drive and a million miles away from the choking M25.
To unwind, Kelly rediscovers her love of the fells, and she hikes to clear headspace. It also allows her to reconnect with her late father, who recently died of cancer. He was also in the police force and used to take Kelly walking.
It took me a few drafts to create Kelly as she appears in Dark Game. I knew I wanted a feisty northern woman who’d go the extra mile. She applies herself to whatever she does, and she comes with a punch. I wanted a female detective who could stand alone and be an inspiration to junior offices- male and female. I didn’t want her to be anyone’s protégé and I didn’t want her tied down.
I also didn’t want her perfect. She makes mistakes, she speaks her mind, she has a fractious relationship with her sister, who stayed in Cumbria to raise a family and is the polar opposite of Kelly; and she struggles to live harmoniously with her mother, whose home she is sharing until she finds a place of her own.
What I love about Kelly- and I hope other people do too- is her instinct and her tenacity. She’s not one to mess with and she won’t stop until she’s nailed those responsible for some despicable crimes.

Rachel Lynch grew up in Cumbria and the lakes and fells are never far away from her. London pulled her away to teach History and marry an Army Officer, whom she followed around the globe for thirteen years. A change of career after children led to personal training and sports therapy, but writing was always the overwhelming force driving the future. The human capacity for compassion as well as its descent into the brutal and murky world of crime are fundamental to her work.
