Can you describe your character?

Coco Pinchard is an everywoman, a person who I hope readers can relate to. She is a successful writer, who has an interesting mix of friends and a useless husband and terrible in-laws. Much of the comedy in the books comes from her relationship with her awful in-laws, in particular her mother-in-law, Ethel.

What is Coco's job role and where do they work?

Coco was a teacher (and not a very good one!) but she is now a full-time writer. Coco is at home a lot, with all the distractions that come with it


Where did the original idea of her come about?

I was on the train home one night in 2007. I was living in London, and the first iPhone had just come out, and so many people were on the train and completely engrossed in their new phones. I wondered what they were saying, and this was the starting point for The Not So Secret Emails of Coco Pinchard.

What makes Coco original?

What makes The Not So Secret Emails of Coco Pinchard original, is that the emails are written as one sided. The reader only gets to see what Coco writes and not the response of who she writes to. I’m not sure of any other writer has used this style. Yet.

What makes her tick?

I think what makes the books tick is class difference. Britain is such a class-ridden place. Everything is about class and social status. Great stories are about conflict between characters, and Coco is a middle-class girl who fell in love with a working- class lad, and she finds herself in the middle of the two families who don’t get on. It makes for endless drama and lots of comedy situations. The series begins with the first book in 1985 and the fifth book is currently at 2012. There are more books to come!

What is her biggest fear?

Not being liked.

If you and your character met in real life, do you think you’d get on?

I don’t know. Perhaps we’d just go for coffee and take it from there. 

Who would you like to see play Coco if your books were made into a film or TV show?

I don’t know, part of me wants them to stay as books. Too much would have to change to make the leap from book to TV or film. However, if it did happen, I would let someone else do it. Often an author is too close to their book to adapt it to the screen. I would have loved Victoria Wood to play Coco. She was a true idol of mine.

How many books do you have in the series so far?

Five.

What’s in store for Coco next?

In book 5, Coco had just given birth and moved to the country. Several years have passed, so the next book will deal with her being the mother of a 7-year-old, adapting to life on a farm. There is also going to be a big revelation from her past which turns her life upside down. I can’t wait to write it, and hopefully, I can start on it next year.
