Getting To Know The Character Interview with Babs Miller #BloodSecrets

Over the course of the week to celebrate the release of Blood Secrets by Dreda Say Mitchell Book 4: Flesh and Blood Series. I am super excited to share My getting To Know the Character interview (told from first person) with a few of the characters. First up is the main Character Babs Miller

Can you describe your character?
Of course I can describe my character - I might not have seen the inside of a school classroom since the age of 15 but let’s face it babe, I taught Dreda everything she knows about the writing game. The poor girl couldn’t string a sentence together before I took her in hand. My character? If I had to compare myself to a chocolate, I’d probably be one of those soft centres, hard on the outside but orange cream within. If I was an animal, I’d probably be a tigress – you’ve got to look after your cubs, ain’t ya? If I was a tree, I’d probably be an English oak – I’m sound timber despite everything.

What is your job and where do you work?
Looking after my kids has been a job for ten people, so full-time employment has been a bit of a stretch over the years. Of course, I started out as a teenager working at Stanley Miller’s dodgy photographic agency up west. We all know how that turned out. I ended up marrying the bastard. That was enough to put anyone off working. Since then I’ve done some of the usual things, cleaning, reception work, retail and – hold on a minute – the cops don’t tune into this blog do they?

Where did the original idea for you come from?
I’m realer than real, just ask my gentlemen friends. Dreda reckons I’m a blend of various women she knew growing up on an estate in Whitechapel. Honestly, I know she’s a writer but she really she should stop making things up – I’m real, OK?

What makes you original?
I’ve never claimed to be original. There’s loads of birds like me out there, minding their own business and just trying to get along – I think that’s what people like about me.

What makes you tick?
My kids. I was just a drifter before they came along. The fact that all three of them have deadbeat dads just made me all the more determined.

What is your biggest fear?
I’ve heard Holloway’s a bit grim.

If you and Dreda met in real life, do you think you’d get on?
I dunno. Dreda used to be a teacher and they have to pass a CRB check don’t they? If she ain’t got a record I can’t see us having much in common.

Who would you like to see play you if the books were turned into a film or TV show?
I reckon Angelina Jolie could do a bang up job. She’d have to spruce herself up a bit though.

How many books are there in the series so far?
There’s four in the trilogy (Dreda obviously don’t know what a trilogy is)

What’s in store for them next?
Not sure about that. I don’t want to give any spoilers for book four, Blood Secrets. Let’s just say Dreda might have written me out. But then again…maybe not. Who knows?

Thank you so much for joining me today....it's been a scream
