Getting to know the character with Kim Stone

Angela Marsons joins me today to take part in my Getting to know the character interview with Kim Stone

Can you describe your character?

I would describe Kim Stone as rude, stubborn, lacking in social skills but driven and passionate about getting justice for the underdog. She has few friends and is closed off to forming real bonds with other people.  She rides a motorcycle and restores old classic bikes in her spare time.

What is Kim’s job role and where does she work?

Kim is a Detective Inspector and works from Halesowen Police Station in the Black Country.

Where did the original  idea of Kim come about?

The voice of Kim had been rattling around in my head for years but I ignored it because it sounded so unlikeable. It was only once I started to write about her that I began to understand her redeeming qualities.

What makes Kim original?

I think one of the things that makes her original is that she doesn’t succumb to romance in the books. She doesn’t really want a love interest and just focuses all her energy on solving crimes. She does have a wicked sense of humour that softens her up a bit and she is very self-aware of her own shortcomings.

What makes her tick?

What makes Kim tick is getting to the bottom of a crime and exposing criminals and murderers and just generally horrible people. She likes a puzzle to solve and while she’s got one it consumes her.

What is her biggest fear?

Her biggest fear is being unable to keep the demons of her past neatly tucked away in the boxes

If you and your character met in real life, do you think you’d get on?

Now that has to be one of the best questions I’ve ever been asked and I honestly don’t know. I do share certain qualities with my character although I do have much better social skills, I like to think. But, as I detest bad manners I probably wouldn’t get on with her all that well.

Who would you like to see play Kim if your books were made into a film or TV show?

The person who most closely resembles the character in my head is Kate Beckinsale from the Underworld movies.

How many books do you have in the series so far?

Broken Bones is book 7 in the Kim Stone series and I’m contracted to write a total of 16 Kim books.

What’s in store for Kim next?

I’m currently working on book 8 and it’s safe to say that Kim will face some emotional obstacles.
